# The Claim-Extract Prompt (Chapter 11)

**Use when:** a document arrives that someone wants your name on: review, forward, co-sign, or "take a look" with a deadline attached. Rung two of the verification ladder, after the ninety-second skim.

Scrub first, per Chapter 3: no customer names, no internal figures. Describe and sample; the claims you extract describe the document, they do not forward it. Then extract, claim by claim, no evaluation, no editing:

```
List every factual claim in this document as a numbered list. Include
numbers, dates, quotes, named sources, and anything that asserts
something about the world. Do not evaluate. Extract.
```

## What extraction does

Two things happen. The document becomes countable, and so does the checking. And the words get demoted: they stop being facts and become claims, a vocabulary you cannot accidentally trust.

A claim is any sentence that asserts something about the world: a number, a date, a name, a quote, a causal statement, a citation. Twelve claims in a quarterly summary is a normal haul: three numbers, two quotes, one citation, the rest description.

## One caution

The tool may offer a confidence score per claim. Ignore the scores. Confidence is a feeling the model is very good at imitating, and it is not verification.

## What happens next

The numbered list feeds rung three, the source-check (checklists/source-check-checklist.md). Claims that fail source-check go on the flag-list (templates/flag-list-template.md), corrected or flagged, never silent. Let the agent extract, then read the list and keep the claims that matter to your decision.
