How an episode works

HOW AN EPISODE WORKS

Every episode starts as an audio script. Comedy has to work out loud, so I write for the ear first and adapt the other formats from that script. Below is the checklist every episode has to pass before I call it done.

Slug
Season, episode number, working title. Titles stay unpublished while I'm drafting.
Cold open
Has to establish the world, what the lead wants, and land the first laugh — all before the title.
A-story / runner
The A-story carries the plot; the runner carries a recurring gag. The two have to collide by the end.
Button
A closing line that lands one last turn on the episode. No episode is done without one.
Read-aloud pass
Every draft gets read out loud before it counts as done, with timings noted.
Format notes
What each format may change: pacing, chapter breaks, scene headings. What none may change: the canon, the characters' wants, the order of the jokes.
